Only if there is a light from within

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

Real, unconditional love

I have never met a person whose greatest need was anything other than real, unconditional love. You can find it in a simple act of kindness toward someone who needs help. There is no mistaking love. You feel it in your heart. It is the common fiber of life, the flame that heats our soul, energizes our spirit and supplies passion to our lives. It is our connection to God and to each other.

Healing does not necessarily mean to become physically well

Healing does not necessarily mean to become physically well or to be able to get up and walk around again.  Rather, it means achieving a balance between the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions. . . .  At the end of their lives [five-year-old children with leukemia] they have little or no pain.  They are emotionally sound, and on an intellectual level they can share things it is almost impossible to believe could come from a child.  To me this is a healing, although they are not well from our earthly point of view.

The best way to nourish the soul

Had I taken the fork of despair, I would have remained angry and depressed over the fire, missing a golden opportunity to move West, to be closer to my son. Looking back, I see that I was too attached to my old environment to make the move on my own. I needed the tragedy to push me onward. I don't mean to trivialize the difficulty of certain aspects of life. It is important to look for the larger picture. If we could see that everything, even tragedy, is a gift in disguise, we would then find the best way to nourish the soul . . . "Crises" can help us discover much about ourselves and enrich our lives.
